The World Swing Dance Council held its June membership meeting at Liberty Swing on June 29th at 10 am (EST).
In a recent general membership meeting, the World Swing Dance Council (WSDC) outlined several important updates and initiatives to improve operations and address community concerns.
Board member K Newhouse opened the meeting by reiterating the WSDC’s mission to inspire swing dancing worldwide and foster community growth. Treasurer Kim Lou followed with a financial report highlighting a strong first-quarter performance with a total income of $20,556.
John Lindo, representing the Chief Judge Committee, announced the rollout of a new Chief Judge training program. He also revealed an ongoing audit of scoring systems used at WSDC events to ensure rule compliance and maintain contest integrity.
Jim Tigges introduced changes to the petitioning process, centralizing petitions to move up in skill levels while keeping petitions to move down under the jurisdiction of individual event chief judges.
Kim Lou detailed several rule changes, including new requirements for the Champions division and clarifications on combined divisions. These changes aim to standardize competition structures across events.
The meeting took an unexpected turn when renowned dancer Robert Royston initiated a lengthy discussion about the history and future of the Champions division. Royston expressed concerns about the current structure and suggested potential changes, including renaming the division.
Board members acknowledged Royston’s feedback and emphasized their commitment to gathering diverse perspectives from the community before making any significant changes. They encouraged attendees and the wider swing dance community to continue providing input on these matters.
As the meeting concluded, the board stressed their dedication to carefully considering all feedback and a measured approach to implementing changes. They announced that the next general meeting would be held at an upcoming event, with the exact date to be determined.
This meeting highlighted the WSDC’s ongoing efforts to balance tradition with evolution in the competitive swing dance world as it navigates the complex task of managing a growing global community.
